Yard lighting

Yard lighting

High masts make it challenging to provide container terminals, port yards and other harbor areas with good and efficient lighting. High masts are often over 40m tall and placed far apart. Distances of over 100m up to 175m apart are not uncommon.

We ensure that your harbor yard is professionally equipped with optimal LED lighting which is completely tailored to your situation. We stand for customization and for high-quality at a fair price.

Portlight is your professional total supplier for port yard lighting.

We solve your problem

It is remarkable that still today, many harbor terrains like port yards and container terminals, are illuminated in an outdated way. In order to properly illuminate these enormous terrains, in the past huge fixtures of 1000W up to 2000W, were used. On top of that their whopping energy consumption was again increased by around 20% due to the power usage by their control gear.

Perhaps your harbor yard is also still illuminated with old fashioned, high energy consuming High Pressure Sodium, Mercury Vapor of Metal Halide lamps. Then it’s time to consider changing to LED fixtures.

In addition, due to the extreme height of masts of 30m+ it is rather difficult to conduct maintenance or to carry out replacements. Expensive rental costs for high-rise platforms and labor costs have to be taken into consideration for the simple reason that the luminaires are hard to reach.

Stop wasting energy and eliminate your maintenance cost on your yard lighting fixtures: change to LED now. Our Portlight experts gladly show you the way. They know what you need.

We deliver

With almost two decades of experience in illuminating harbor terrains, we know all norms, standards and requirements when it comes to sustainable modern lighting. We know how to illuminate each harbor terrain according to the applicable norms and/or regulations and we do this in the most efficient way possible.

Our fixtures can be placed on masts with a height of 50m or more. They produce high visibility, which means uniform light at the correct intensity across the surface in an efficient and sustainable way.

It is a proven fact that LED reduces energy consumption. Therefore for example our 600W LED luminaires can easily replace 1000W SON-T or HPI-T luminaire to immediately save costs. Furthermore, these luminaires have the option of dynamic control via dali, pwm or 0-10V, which will increase the savings to 80% and up.

The savings can be even bigger when the dimming function is in operation through the use of sensors, also called dynamic lighting solutions. This means the luminaires will switch off or they turn back to for instance only 10% of their power when there is no activity on the yard. Dimming to orientation lighting levels during periods of inactivity make sense because camara surveillance can continue undisturbed and the safety of the workforce is guaranteed.

As maintenance work on high masts are a tough task, Portlight offers fixtures that are virtually free of maintenance. In the rare event a LED fixture breaks down unexpectedly, in most of the cases the reason is a defect driver. The drivers of fixtures in the Portlight portfolio are easy to replace. Besides, many of our fixtures are equipped with multiple drivers. In case of a damaged driver, the other driver(s) remain operational. The default driver can be replaced at a convenient time. Until then, the mast remains operational without severely compromising the safety of the employees.

Our team of experienced engineers have the expertise and the skills to design light plans for each harbor terrain situation, even the most complicated ones. with the Portlight light engineers make use of the latest computer aided design programs, such as Dialux.

Please find below 8 benefits for replacement of your fixtures.

  • Reduced cost and energy consumption
  • Easy maintenance and high reliability
  • Sustainability
  • Legislations and regulation
  • Higher labor productivity
  • Improved safety
  • Business continuity

  1. Reduced cost and energy consumption

Many yards are still illuminated with traditional and sometimes very outdates fixtures like Metal Halide (HPI/HQI), High-Pressure Sodium (SON/NAV) or Low-Pressure Sodium (SOX).

Today it is common knowledge that big energy and operational cost savings of 50-80% can be realized with contemporary LED lighting.

Savings can be even higher than 80% up when using dynamic lighting solutions, or dimming through the use of sensors. This means the smart LED fixtures make use of sensors that detect motion and/or changes in daylight. In response to the sensor detections, they ensure the light to switches on, off or to remain at an orientation level for safety.

Portlight offers cost saving LED alternatives that are especially developed for outdoor lighting. Nearly all of our fixtures are equipped or can be equipped with modern electronic dynamic lighting solutions for even bigger savings in energy consumption.

  1. Easy maintenance and high reliability

It is a rather difficult job to carry out light source replacement at high masts, especially when the weather conditions are bad. Corroded screws make it often hard to unlock the nuts and bolts of outdoor fixtures. And, it is quite challenging to replace an old broken ballast. Hence, the replacement of high mast luminaires is both time and money consuming.

Portlight LED fixtures are free of maintenance. They save you in a considerable way on maintenance costs while their reliability is guaranteed.

  1. Sustainability

Today, more and more people are committed to protect the planet and to stop climate changes. As a consequence, energy savings and CO2 emission reductions are part of the sustainability targets many companies.

It is a fact that LED saves energy, hence it reduces the output of CO2.

We are dedicated to help our customers achieving their objectives in terms of sustainability with our Portlight lighting solutions.

  1. Legislation and regulation

Governments from all over the world are increasingly taking responsibility for their contribution to a healthier environment. The Paris climate agreement ensured that stricter requirements, regulation and even legislation on the reduction of CO2 are imposed. In addition, the sanctions are also becoming severer and higher.

Today local authorities require companies to replace their lighting with alternative solutions that save considerably on energy consumption. The authorities can even refuse or revoke environmental permits if the desired alternatives are not followed. Or they proceed to enforce sanctions.

Portlight’s energy-saving yard lighting offers the best alternatives to meet the government imposed requirements, rules and regulations

  1. Higher labor productivity

It is scientifically proven that there is a correlation between better visibility and higher labor productivity. Simply put, people see their work better. As a result, they work faster and make less mistakes.

The Color Rendering Index (CRI) and the correct color temperature (K) both play an important role in determining the quality of light in a harbor environment.

A CRI of Ra>80 is the standard of all Portlight luminaires, hence good visibility. We deliver the optimal color temperature customized to your situation and needs. For more information click here.

  1. Improved safety

Working on or around a harbor yard is not without risks for employees, especially when interaction between man and machine is involved. Good light on sites, both in light level as in light quality, is crucial for safety reasons. It is scientifically proven that better light generates safer working conditions. For many years now, it has been mandatory to wear a safety helmet, safety shoes and goggles and a reflective jacket during work. However, safe light conditions are, unfortunately, often (still) absent.

Newly installed, the level of light of conventional fixtures is adequate. However, the light output of these lamps reduces significantly over time. The light output for gas discharge lamps like SON and HPI can decline up to 50% or more over its lifetime. In addition, environmental pollution, like salty air, insects and rain make luminaires dirty and thus less efficient.

The luminaires for port yards in Portlight’s portfolio are all dust-, spray- and waterproof (IP66 or IP67). In addition, the cover glass consists of tempered glass being processed with an antistatic treatment during production. This means that our polycarbonate (PC) or polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) lenses are protected against insects, dirt and dust.

Our fixtures are highly efficient as they are equipped with the highest quality LEDs and state of the art electronic drivers produced by A-manufacturers. It is proven that the depreciation in light output is only 20% during their lifespan.

EU norms

The companies that are committed to offer safe working conditions need to submit the local lighting Norms. In the EU, this norm is EN 12464-2 for outdoor lighting. Insurance companies are also strict on the lighting conditions in the event of (human) damage caused by a calamity. Our experts are knowledgeable of the applicable norms and are pleased to advice you properly in order for you to offer safe working conditions while respecting the requirements imposed by the insurance company.

  1. Business continuity

Many governments already prohibit specific light sources. One of them is the Mercury Vapor lamp (HPL/HQL). This type of light sources is off the market. HPI/HQI and SON/NAV will also disappear completely over time as they are inefficient and environmental harmful. Major manufacturers like Philips, Osram and GE already stopped the production. In addition, it becomes more and more difficult to obtain the ballasts. As lighting plays a critical role in and around ports, failure or non-availability of the lighting has a negative impact on the continuity of your business.

Portlight offers tailor made lighting solutions with reliable, high-quality and fairly priced products. Even for the most complicated harbor terrain situations.
